Which is better ... working for a small company versus working for a large company. While many of us don't care, any job is better than no job, it is still a good question to ponder should we get the choice.
Small Company. Our government considers a small company as a company with a workforce less than 500. In reality, a small company usually has less than 25 employees. Small companies provide more opportunity, however less opportunity to hide. They are generally fast paced, more stressful since scheduling for a small company is usually tied to cash flow. A month delay could cause the company to go out of business. So work hours could be irregular, and at times in excess of 8-10 hours per day. On the plus side, if you are winner, you'll be noticed and advancement is quick and rewarding. The more projects you can handle and complete on schedule and under budget, the more opportunities for advancement will come your way. Job security is linked to performance.
Large Company. No longer known for job security. As a matter of fact, when working for a small company, you know what's going on; whereas working for a large company you will very rarely know whether or not your job is secure. Lots of competition for top jobs. Usually benefits are better. Work fewer hours, less stressful, more paid vacations, paid holidays and health insurance. Another advantage is training. Many large companies offer continuous opportunities for training and upgrading technical knowledge.
Ultimately, the choice depends on the job. Large company pay is usually more than small company pay; however growth and equity is usually a tremendous benefit for an association with a small company.
